a day in the life

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

I am still going strong on taking at least one picture every day, but I decided to capture a few snippets from one whole day.

Mike and Christian were up early to get to the dentist by 8:00.  Mike had a cavity and Christian needed to have a tooth pulled.  I got Drew up and ready for school.  He has been taking home lunch to school--banana, cheerios (he buys milk at school) and a yogurt.  He missed carpool because he was busy finishing part of his homework that he forgot about last night.  I ran him to school a few minutes late.

Mike called at 9:15 saying that he was on his way to take Christian to school and that I should maybe take him a Jamba Juice for lunch.

The girls (who are off track) slept in until 9:30.  They played outside for a bit, played the piano and had a few hula hoop contests.

At 10:15 I got a call from the school saying that Christian was in the office sobbing that his mouth hurt.  I put on my I-didn't-do-my-hair-today hat and drove to the school.  (I never did end up getting my hair done today.)  He had big puffy eyes and was holding an ice pack to his cheek.  He said that it didn't hurt at first because the dentist had numbed it, but that he needed more numbing stuff.  When I signed him out at 10:22, I noticed his signing in was at 9:22.  He got a whopping hour of school in today.  The dentist gave him a tooth necklace to hold his pulled tooth.  He wore it all day.

We stopped on the way home for his orange Jamba Juice.  When we got home, I gave him some Motrin and then he went right to my bed.  He asked for his blankets--stars and quack quack--and his cheetah.

I had already planned to introduce one of my favorite movies to the girls while they were off track.  Today was the perfect day to do it.  They all lounged on my bed and I folded and ironed laundry while we watched Anne of Green Gables.  I made a few phone calls for work and sent a few emails.

After the movie and his nap, Christian did some Chinese homework and Jessi did some of her off-track packet.  I dealt with the huge pile of papers that had accumulated on the kitchen desk.

I got my planters planted--an early Mother's Day gift.  I took a picture of Jessi with some of our tulips.  I love tulips and they are going to be gone too soon.

We took a break from the movie at 1:00 to have lunch.  I fixed tortellini with tomato sauce and cut up a few apples.  I made peanut butter bars for teacher appreciation tomorrow, but realized that I was out of cocoa, so I had to wait on the frosting.

At 3:45 we went to pick up carpool for Bev's tumbling.  I dropped the girls off and then ran home to get Drew's permission slip signed for his scout rappelling activity that night.  Drew practiced piano and then walked to piano.  I went back to feed the cats at the canal and pick up from tumbling.

I picked up Drew early from piano to get him to scouts, then ran Bev to soccer practice and to the store for a few groceries.  Christian played my phone on the way home and then did his reading. Jessi sang Primary songs.   I took a picture of the street I drive several times every day getting these children to and fro.

Mike got home from work and brought me a big Diet Pepsi--it's like he can sense when I have had a hectic day and really need one.  We had black bean and chicken enchiladas for dinner.

Drew got home around 8 and had dinner while doing his homework.

I listened to Jessi read and Mike listened to Christian read.  Then best part of the day was snuggling the two of them before bed.

Mike had a late soccer game and took Bev with him.  They got home around 11:00 and then headed to bed.  I did a load of laundry and then went to bed around midnight.

Today I was tired.  I sometimes tell Mike that I didn't get much, if anything checked off my to-do list.  He then reminds me that if I did the important stuff, I got the right stuff checked off my list. I did get some right stuff checked off my list.

Today I was grateful.  I got to be with my girls and my toothachy boy.  We had plenty to eat and a safe place to live.  We had flowers and comforts and each other.  We had opportunity.

The days are flying by and I feel these kids growing up at lightening speed.  I know that one day, I will look back and miss days like today.

While typing this, I hear the 10,000 Maniac's song in my head.

These are the days you'll remember
Never before and never since, I promise
Will the whole world be warm as this
And as you feel it,
You'll know it's true
That you are blessed and lucky
It's true that you
Are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you.
